We are happy to share that our colleague Dr. Alice Moore was recently published in the Journal of Adventure Education and Outdoor Learning with her research partners Dr. Michelle E. E. Bauer and Dr. Helen Lynch.
Their article “Inclusive play space design for users with neurophysical disabilities: adult, youth, and child perspectives in Ireland” addresses the question, ‘What are service users’ perspectives on inclusive play opportunities?’
The article demonstrates the principle of “nothing about us without us” – listening to and learning from the lived experiences of individuals and families living with neuro-physical disabilities. There is great importance in the article as the authors highlight that it goes further than just advancing conversations on play space design for users of Crann, they argue that they respond to the global issue of excluding individuals and communities living with disabilities and their perspectives on play topics more broadly from research (Olsen, 2015; Van Amsterdam et al., 2015).
The research study itself was of participatory research examining service users’ perspectives on play space design at the Crann Centre, with the purpose of informing the design of our inclusive play and recreation space that was being planned at the time for individuals with neuro-physical disabilities (children and adults) and their families. The playground and recreation space subsequently opened in 2022, based on the recommendations of the research findings. The facility is now an integral part of Crann’s service offering.
