Portmagee Walk n’Roll Reflection

Hello everybody! I hope all young people are enjoying their summer holidays. I’m sure everyone that participated in Summer Camps had an absolute blast with the rewarding Crann community, making connections and having fun, because that’s what life is all about and Crann is all about enabling families with neuro-physical disabilities to have fulfilling lives. The good news is the summer fun isn’t quite over yet – still lots more to enjoy at Conservation at Crann and we couldn’t wrap up the summer without an End of Summer Barbecue! So excited! See you all there!

It is truly heartwarming to see how many people came together once again and wholeheartedly acknowledged the valuable work of Crann through the Walk n’Roll fundraiser. Crann is based in Cork but is most certainly recognized worldwide.

My family and I were delighted to be able to host our community walk again this year from the Kerry Cliffs, Portmagee, to the Skellig Experience Visitor Centre in Valentia Island, and we are overwhelmed and continuously amazed by the support of such a generous community. It really means a lot to my family and I love seeing how much people get behind this campaign and look forward to this event every year. It is a lovely way to connect with the community and also a lovely event for people who may be visiting the area. My family and I, along with the wider community, really cherish the positive vibes on the day. People are connecting with other people who they may not get to see on a regular basis and it’s such a privilege for us as a family to know that by organising this event we are promoting better health and wellbeing by enabling opportunities for connection and participation. Not only are we enabling participation but crucially equal participation – an event like this creates an opportunity for people with neuro-physical disabilities and people who don’t have neuro-physical disabilities to participate together.

As a person who has had cerebral palsy and being a wheelchair user all my life I know the importance of reducing isolation and creating that sense of belonging. There are many ways society could improve to address the needs of families with neuro-physical disabilities, but families need to feel included, respected and know that they belong in society.

I would like to thank Everyone who traveled to support me – my Crann friends Sarah Harrington and Sarah Dullea, along with Crann CEO Padraig, his wife Eithne and everyone who donated to Crann. I’m delighted to say I have raised €7921 – your donations will enable the Crann team to maintain and expand their service through their internationally recognised family-centred model of care providing services in health and continence, psychological Wellbeing, Independent living, mobility, education and career pathways and social capital services.

Your Donations will have a life changing impact on families today tomorrow and into the future. Thank you to all the Crann staff team and volunteers for organising The Final 1km event every year, it is a great way to connect with other families and thank you to all the Crann families who make Crann the rewarding community it is!
