Volunteer of the Month September – Tara O’Donovan

We are delighted to announce Tara O’Donovan as our September Volunteer of the Month. Tara is a very active member of the Crann community having volunteered at a variety of events including our Children’s Summer Camp, which took place here at the Crann Centre in July. 

Tara has made a tremendous contribution of her time to help all those at the Crann Centre and we are thrilled to recognize her effort.

Crann attend UCC Disability Support Services’ Employability Forum

Crann Centre CEO Padraig Mallon, recently attended University College Cork Disability Support Service’s Employability Forum hosted by VMWare Ballincollig, which held a focus on disability initiatives.  

The forum which took place on Tuesday September 10th looked at how various organisations and companies could develop disability initiatives, promote an inclusive community,  enhance diversity in the workplace and educate staff members. Crann working in conjunction with UCC and promoting this has acted as an advocate for disability inclusion. 

Forums such as this provide an opportunity for Crann to inform companies of the needs of those with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus and how they can advance their diversity and inclusion by facilitating those with disabilities. Similarly, such forums allow Crann to build networks and work alongside larger companies developing best practice and initiative.  …

Assistive Technology Enhancing Education for Students with Disabilities

Crann is delighted to welcome Deirdre Madden, Assistive Technology Outreach Co-ordinator at University College Cork to the Crann Centre.

Deirdre will be speaking to teenagers in the Crann Centre at 2pm on Saturday 28th of September.

The talk will look at the importance of assistive technology and how it can benefit those with varying difficulties.

Assistive technology allows young people take control of their education, to learn in different ways in order to reach their full potential though methods that best suit each individual.

Bereavement Information Workshop’s

The Crann Centre is hosting two separate Bereavement Information Workshops for Adults and Parents led by Deborah O’Neill Fearon an experienced bereavement psychotherapist.

The workshops will provide information about grief, loss, the grieving process and understanding its impact on a person’s life. Individuals will have the opportunity and space to talk about coping with loss and how it impacts their life. The workshops will also allow individuals a chance to remember and honor those who have passed.

  • Adult Bereavement Support Sessions will take place over two dates at the Crann Centre on Wednesday 25th of September 11am – 12:30pm and Wednesday 9th of October 11am – 12:30pm.


  • Parent’s Bereavement Information Evening will take place at the Crann Centre on Wednesday 2nd  of October 7pm – 9pm.

Success At Summer Workshops

This week saw both our Children’s and Teenager’s Workshops finish here at the Crann Centre. 

After four consecutive weeks the workshops finished just in time for school. The workshops have been packed with different, creative and fun activities all with the greater purpose of building friendships and understanding. 

Uniqueness of Difference – Our children’s workshop, finished Wednesday. Over the previous four weeks the children explored the idea of difference and how all individuals are different. The workshop also gave the children an opportunity to explore their feelings, emotions and opinions on difference and how they could best express them. 

Growing in Confidence – Our teenagers workshop finished Thursday. Over the past few weeks the teens have explored the idea and importance of resilience in building confidence.…

New Head Of Services

We are very pleased to announce that Ms Colette Cahill has been appointed to the role of Head of Services here at the Crann Centre. Colette is no stranger to Crann having worked with the charity over the past two years developing and delivering programmes such ”A Moment For Me”, ”Uniqueness Of Difference” and Growing In Confidence”.

Padraig Mallon Crann Centre CEO welcomed Colette’s appointment. He said that  “Colette’s background in counselling and neuro-developmental therapy alongside her experience in supporting those with disabilities made her an ideal candidate”. 

 Colette says that she is “ really excited to take up the role as Head of Services and is really looking forward to working with the team to develop and grow the programmes, workshops and services Crann will be offering’’.

Visit to The Swiss Paraplegic Foundation’s annual summer camp

Our Chief Executive Padraig Mallon was in Nottwil Switzerland last week, having accepted an invitation from The Swiss Paraplegic Foundation (SPF) to observe the closing days of their annual 3 week Summer Camp for teens with Spina Bifida Hydrocephalus.

SPF has an ongoing association with Crann which has been facilitated by Kerry native John Leen who works at the world class facility.  The summer camp which provides a range of clinical inputs and focuses on life skills and independent living was attended by 12 teenagers from across Switzerland. Their goals are to build their resilience and attain the skills to manage their transition from teenagers to adulthood in the context of the services they receive and aspects of daily living.

SPF have offered to support Crann as we plan and implement a programme to support children living with Spina Bifida, Hydrocephalus and their families to manage their transition from teenage years to adulthood.…

Teens Club Is Back!

We at the Crann Centre are thrilled to welcome back our Teens Club on Saturday August 24th. The Club will be hosting a special movie day from 12:30pm until 3:00pm in the Crann Centre, open to ages 12-18 years.

The club offers a fantastic opportunity to for teens to make friends and enjoy themselves in a comfortable, open environment. The Teen Club meets monthly with a date yet to be confirmed for September. Hosted by Aileen Buckley and Pauline O’Neill the Teens are sure to engage in various fun and social activities.

Summer Camp Complete

This week saw our summer camp take place where children aged between 5 and 15 engaged in a whole range of activities and made friends along the way.

Monday morning saw the children tackle the great outdoors with a series of tennis games at the local courts, the rain held off as the children practiced their swing and worked up an appetite for lunch. The afternoon saw yoga stretches and creative art along with some demonstrations from those in the Turas Saol wheelchair skills programme.

Tuesday began with a bang as archery practice had everyone including the volunteers aiming for bullseye. A few rounds of dodgeball led into the musically symphony that was our summer camp band. The children drummed and sang along to classic’s such as the Beatles and Queen, even getting the opportunity to come up with their own pieces.…

Reminder! Our Children and Teenager Workshops begin next week.

We at the Crann Centre, are very excited to host workshops next week for both children and teenagers.

   Our 4-week workshop for children with Spina Bifida/Hydrocephalus or other physical disabilities age 6yrs – 12yrs, will look at the Uniqueness of Difference. This workshop will explore what difference means and how each individual is different regardless of whether they have a disability or not. Over the course of the four weeks, Children will have the opportunity to express their thoughts and feelings of difference while learning ways to express these thoughts and feelings in a safe healthy way in the wider community. All this will be done through fun and creativity. The workshop will run for 4 consecutive Wednesdays commencing Wednesday 31st July from 11am-1pm.
