Parents of children with spina bifida, hydrocephalus and other neuromuscular conditions tend to be faced with a continuous barrage of challenges from financial strain, difficulty finding resources to outright exhaustion, feelings of confusion or emotional burn out. The most important step in supporting parents of children with additional needs is first helping them recognise that they need to start by taking a moment for themselves, a moment to understand the importance of self care and mindfulness.
In our new free six week programme for parents of children with additional needs we work together to understand the impact of caring on the parent, identifying physical and mental impacts, anxieties and stresses, frustrations, strengths and expectations and building a toolbox of techniques and coping mechanisms that will help, such as guided meditation, mindfulness, strategies for being heard and the practicalities of self care.
Colette Darcy, programme developer with Crann said:
We are really excited to launch this new programme for parents and offer that extra support that parents of children with spina bifida, hydrocephalus and other neuromuscular conditions need.
Through our research we have spoken with families to find out what they want and need and their ideas have shaped the development of this programme. Through this and other programmes the Crann team are energetic and passionate about supporting families in the best way possible.
