The Crann 2Generation model of care uniquely supports whole-families by addressing the health and emotional needs of both children & adults living with neuro-physical disabilities and their family members.

We understand that disability does not just affect the person living with disability but has a profound impact on the fabric of the whole family. Research validates that two-generation approaches ensure long-term success for individuals and stability for the whole family.

In 2016 Crann conducted a needs assessment to identify gaps in service provision, for persons with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus (SBH).

The assessment identified the unmet health and social care needs, not only for persons with neuro-physical disabilities. A key finding was “the significance of creating a service that broadens traditional thinking about disability beyond the biomedical dimensions of SBH”. This finding necessitated Crann to “develop a model that aims to promote activity and participation in daily life activities through the lifespan” (Collins, 2017).

Informed by these findings, Crann adopted its two-generation (2Gen) Model of Care, that focuses on health, wellbeing, and participation, through holistic and comprehensive wraparound care programmes, enabling better outcomes for children, adults, and families accessing services in Crann.

Origins of 2Generation

The Aspen Institute is one of America’s leading think tanks. Since 2010 Ascend at the Aspen Institute has been leading the development of a two-generation approach to combat inter-generational poverty.

In 2012, Ascend at the Aspen Institute published the “Two Generations, One Future” report that laid the groundwork for the growth and development of the 2Gen field’s expansion.

Today, Crann is a part of Aspen’s 600 strong global network of partner organisations, the 1st organisation in Europe to participate and one of only three pioneering 2Gen care for disability within the Aspen network.

The Crann Centre and the Aspen Institute presented to the Joint Committee on Disability Matters discussing “Supporting People with Disabilities to Live in Communities” on Thursday October 20th, 2022 about the innovation and merits to using a 2Generation model to support families with neuro-physical disabilities.
